According to available figures from the DERS Team, the batch of 23 deported persons in May does sums up to 147 deportations enforced onboard a German hosted – joint EU charter deportation operation between January and May 2026.

These concerns were again brought into focus during a retreat with deported Mothers and Kids on 6 June 2026 at Ogba Zoo in Benin City. The gathering was organised by the Network R4R in cooperation with FREMNET with the aim to engage deported families to support and empower one another.

The retreat was a rare space for affected mothers to reflect on the realities and challenges as survivors of the desert-Mediterranean migration journey to unfortunately get drowned in the paper work of the German bureaucracy and coping with the outcome of the subsequent deportation, separation of families, economic upheaval, social reintegration and the lasting emotional impacts associated with the brutal arrest and violence during the deportation enforcement. Their testimonies served as a reminder that deportation does not end upon arrival in Lagos, but continues with consequences long after people are deported.

The timing of the gathering was particularly significant in expectation of increasing deportation measures that should legitimate the detention of families and children with the enforcement of Common European Asylum System (CEAS) reform that has exposed the Germanised Europe as den of detention in facilitation of massive criminalisation, pushbacks and deportation irrespective of widespread concerns about the human rights implication.

While the governments of refugees’ countries of origin may continue to justify their compliance with these imperialist deportation measures as an administrative duty or obligation, the impending wave of deportations linked to the implementation of the CEAS reforms, which officially took effect on June 12, must not be overlooked. These developments send a clear and troubling message about the European Union’s determination to undermine the right to fair asylum procedures, promote arbitrary detention, and further criminalise migrants both across Europe and beyond.

Evident is that just as decades of fortifying “Fortress Europe” and relentlessly eroding of asylum rights have neither halted human mobility across borders nor effectively delivered the EU’s objective of expanding large-scale deportations., the CEAS reform and similar exclusionary policies are destined to meet the same fate. Unless the structural drivers of displacement and entrenched global inequalities are meaningfully addressed, the continued repression, deterrence, and criminalisation cannot stifle people’s search for safety, dignity, and a better future.

It is increasingly evident that decades of fortifying “Fortress Europe” and systematic dismantling of asylum rights have neither stopped human mobility across borders nor enabled the EU to achieve its large-scale deportations agenda. The recently adopted CEAS reform, alongside other exclusionary is bound to follow the same path of failure.

As long as the structural drivers of displacement—including conflict, exploitation, climate injustice, and entrenched global inequalities—remain unaddressed, no level of repressive policy, deterrence or criminalisation of migrants will prevent people from seeking safety, dignity and opportunities for a better future.

Charter deportation to Nigeria today – 17.06.2026 As the German deportation regime rounds up with violent arrest in facilitation of the routine monthly deportation enforcement to Nigeria, serious questions on […]

[1,15

post-5660","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-allgemein","category-deportation
["GET
